BASIC ELIGIBILTY

Each applicant for a nomination must meet the following basic eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to an academy.  AGE: must be at least 17 years of age, but not past 23rd birthday. CITIZENSHIP: must be a citizen of the United States by birth or naturalization. MARITAL STATUS: must be unmarried and have no legal obligations to support children or other dependents.

Submit a letter requesting nomination consideration. Upon receipt of letter an application nomination consideration form will be sent to you. This form should be returned to:

ACADEMIES AND PRE-CANDIDATE QUESTIONAIRES: 

Begin the pre-candidate questionnaire and file process at the academy of your choice. You can send pre-addressed postcards or write to the addresses below to obtain information and pre-candidate questionnaires. This is a very important process.

You may apply directly to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. A Congressional nomination is not necessary for admissions to this academy. Follow the instructions given to you by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The address is as follows:

YOUR FILE SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING

Your completed nominee information form

A.      SAT and or ACT test scores

B.       Two letters of recommendation, your letters may be written by a counselor, teacher, employer or person from your community who knows you well. (Note: The letters should be addressed to Congressman Tim Ryan)

C.       Official high school transcripts including grade point average, class rank, etc.

D.      A letter from you outlining your accomplishments to date, in school, in your community, church and employment, include a statement as to why you wish to attend a service academy.

E.       If you have received notification of your physical aptitude test date, medical examination, etc. Please make this information available in your file.

F.       Recent color photo.

NOMINATIONS  (nominations do not guarantee admissions to an academy)

To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must have a nomination from an authorized nominating source. The nominating sources include; a Member of the House of Representatives: (nominate from applicants who are residents within their congressional district.) Members of Senate (nominate from applicants in their entire state) and the Vice President of the United States can nominate applicants from the country at large.
