GE foods are dangerous as a category. I am appalled that Europe is establishing and enforcing higher standards than the US. You at the FDA must protect us: It's your job. I'm scared about the health of myself, my children, and my grandchildren. Here's what I want you to require: Mandatory pre-market comprehensive environmental review. Unlike conventional pollutants, where a given amount of pollutant causes a limited amount of damage, a small number of mutant genes could have a population explosion and reproduce forever, causing unlimited and irreparable damage. Mandatory pre-market long-term health testing. GE products could be toxic, cause allergic responses, have lower nutritional value, and compromise immune responses in consumers. Mandatory labeling of GE products. Without mandatory labeling, neither consumers nor health professionals can know if an allergic or toxic reaction was the result of a genetically engineered food. Consumers are deprived of the critical knowledge needed to hold food producers liable should any of these novel products be hazardous. Please end the conflicts of interest that you have with the industries you purport to be regulating. People have been allowed to work for a biotech company, then work for the FDA writing the regulatory rules on that company's product, then go back to working for the company. Ninety-two percent of FDA advisory committee meetings had at least one conflict of interest. -- Jacqui Bishop 914-997-9611 fax 914-684-1860 email: jbishop@bestweb.net Snailmail address until April 20: 23a Hillside Terrace White Plains NY 10601-1102 after April 20 105 Winding Ridge White Plains NY 10603
