FDA Commissioner Dockets Management Branch (HFA 305) Food and Drug Administration 5630 Fisher's Lane, rm. 1061 Rockville, MD 20852 RE: Docket No. 00N-1396, and 00D-1598 Dear FDA, I am deeply concerned about the FDA policies on genetically engineered foods. Many people share this concern, and I appreciate your hearing our opinions until April 3rd. Without further testing, GE foods could be very harmful, not only to individual people who have adverse reactions to these engineered foods, but could also result in serious disturbance of environmental ecology, in which one organism depends upon another for survival. I can imagine that perhaps when these engineered foods have been further tested we might feel informed more adequately to make decisions about eating them and releasing such foods into the environment. "Voluntary labeling” is a very weak policy, which ignores the consumer's right to know. The same value we find in having ingredients or percentages of ingredients listed on many foods is not . I want to know what kind of foods I am buying, and I ask that labeling of GE foods be required to indicate they are GE. This is fair consumer practice and also critical for medical reasons. Thank you for paying attention to the many people who are concerned we are on the brink of another "silent spring."
