FDA Commissioner Dockets Management Branch (HFA 305) Food and Drug Administration 5630 Fisher's Lane, rm. 1061 Rockville, MD 20852 RE: Docket No. 00N-1396, and 00D-1598 Dear FDA, When you take away my choice to CHOOSE the quality of food I buy, you take another step towards a dictatorship. The rights of this country include freedom of religion, and part of my spiritual practice includes being a vegetarian. When you allow companies to genetically alter vegetable foods with fish genes and chicken genes, you are crossing into a dangerous line of ethics. And when you do not demand GE labeling, you take away my choice to choose a truly vegetarian product. Beyond that, I believe that chemical companies 'fund' the FDA, so therefore I do not trust the FDA for one moment to assure me that their rules are in my best interest. It appears that you only care about PROFIT, not health and safety, as has been proved in the past. What looks good and safe in the beginning can have disastrous consequences in the future. Our food chain has been in tact for thousands of years, and to assume that science can safely tamper with that is of the utmost arrogance. You can not go backwards once you introduce a new seed into the environment. You have taken a frighteningly immature attitude towards this fact--and what would cause such ignorance? The fact that you are not in an independent, neutral position. If you continue to believe that you can take away my right to know if my food has been genetically altered, then you are setting yourself up to be responsible for any health and environmental hazard that comes from what you advocate. I pray that you will look into your heart and sincerely ask if allowing genetically altered food to be distributed and sold without safety testing and labeling is a conscious, well meaning action, that takes into account the concerns of the citizens you have been asked to serve.
