As a public health professional, I strongly support a moratorium on genetically engineered foods until long-term studies have quantified the risk to human health and to the environment. It is not right for us to bear the potential consequences of harmful effects in the long-term while producers gain the short-term economic benefits of marketing these products.
I support the application of the Precautionary Principle, which the US signed in 1992 at Rio, to put the burden of proof on the producer to show no risk, rather than on us to show that there are harmful effects. GE foods should be subjected to mandatory testing before marketing, and mandatory labeling so consumers can make informed choices in the market.
