From: Summer Adams [jobiebean@yahoo.com] Sent: Sunday, March 11, 2001 7:21 AM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket #98P-0151/CP1 To whom it may concern: I am writing in support of docket #98P-0151/CP1, the petition filed by Farm Sanctuary to protect downed farm animals. It is vitally important that these animals not be a part of our food system. These animals are dragged by the leg or neck or pushed by tractors and forklifts to slaughter. There is an increased risk of bacterial contamination from the lacerations and broken bones the animals suffer while being treated in this manner. Even more importantly, evidence is mounting that downed animals may be infected with a form of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy ("Mad Cow Disease"). If introduced into our food system, the disease may cause an outbreak of Creutzfeld-Jakob disease, similar to that seen in europe. For these reasons, I support docket #98P-0151/CP1.
