The Wind Tunnel University

WTU Phase 1

The timeline for the phase 1 program implementation is shown. The Langley WTU is currently providing training in areas that are critical to accomplishing Langley Wind Tunnel Enterprise goals and objectives. They are:

  1. Train all technicians, test engineers, instrumentation designers, instrumentation users and others in the basics of Statistical Quality Control through a 30 hour course taught by Mike Hemsch.
  2. Begin basic training of test engineers and other interested parties in Modern Design of Experiments as applied to Wind Tunnel Testing to be taught by Dick Deloach.
  3. Train all test engineers, technicians, and others in the use of Theory of Constraints Project Management and apply these tools to managing the wind tunnel tests and other activities in the wind tunnel facilities. This would involve approximately 24 hours of training for facility managers and planners and 8 hours of training for all others in the RFB facilities.
  4. Train supervisors in basic coaching skills to better implement training and more effectively work with workers in accomplishing WTE goals. This could involve several different sessions as coaching skills are transferred.
  5. Investigate new areas for training in the future by doing pilot courses and study groups with a very limited target audiences. Some examples of this are a lean management study group, lean management pilot project, a process improvement course for fab and model design, supplementary statistical quality control training and others.
