Children's Health Insurance Bill Passes

Rep. Miller Applauds Passage of Children's Health Insurance Bill

Encourages Senate to quickly pass the measure that would insure 11 million children who otherwise would have no coverage at all

Rep. George Miller (D-CA) released the following statement today after the house passed the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 by a vote of 289 to 137. The bill would provide funding to states to insure 11 million low income children for almost 5 years.

"Ensuring proper health care for children is one of the best investments our society can make,” said Miller, a long-time champion of services for low-income and disadvantaged children. “Without health insurance, children do not receive proper health care, which can cause them to fall behind in school and cause their parents to fall behind at work.

"The economic recession makes health insurance for all children even more important. Families who have lost their healthcare coverage because of job loss and who are struggling to make ends meet need the security of knowing that their child has access to affordable and timely health care.

"Today’s bill is a long time coming and is needed now more than ever. Ensuring that all kids have access to health care is a key priority for our country and for this Congress and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to pass this bill quickly so that President-elect Obama can sign it into law soon after he takes office later this month.”
