MENDENHALL CAMPGROUND (AK)

Description

Newly reconstructed in 2OO0 69 camping sites (49 available on a first-come, first-served basis; All others must be reserved on NRRS). Peak Season May 15 to September 15 The campground is situated on the shore of Mendenhall Lake at about 100' elevation with views of the Mendenhall Glacier 1.5 miles distant to the north and flanked by the Mendenhall River to the east, On either side of the campground the mountains rise from 4000' to 7000' above the Mendenhall Glacier. From its source 12 miles up the Juneau lcefield, the glacier flows between the steep jagged peaks of the Coast Mountain Range to its terminus at Mendenhall Lake. Downstream from Mendenhall Lake sits the Mendenhall Campground in relatively flat and open topography of recessional moraines, small lakes and ponds. The vegetation ranges from primary successional forbs and lichens, secondary plant communities consisting of black cottonwood, Sitka alder and willow to mature spruce hemlock forests wIth an under-story of blueberry bushes and mosses, Golden Age and Federal Recreational Lands Senior or Access cards accepted. Nearby amenities include: boardwalk trails with bird-viewing platforms in the campground, Skater's cabin picnic area, hiking/biking trails to the glacier, canoeing and kayaking on Mendenhall Lake and fishing in glacial ponds. Of the 69 sites, 9 are full service RV sites with electricity, water and sewer hook-ups, 9 are partial service RV sites with electricity, and water hook-ups. There are 7 sites located in a separate walk-in backpacker area, 43 of the 69 sites accommodate camping units larger than 30 feet. All sites are furnished with accessible picnic tables, fire grills and tent pads. Water faucets and accessible vault toilets are furnished through out the campground. There are two accessible flush toilet and shower facilities. 56 sites are fully accessible. A central dump-station is located on site. The campground host and garbage dumpster are located near the campground fee station, Firewood is rarely provided, campers are encouraged to bring their own. Campsites are available both by reservation and as a first-come first- served basis. Reservation sites are identified on the site post. The reserving party's name and reservation dates shall be posted on site post prior to reservation date. When reservation sites are not reserved they are available on a first-come first-served basis. Golden Age Golden Access and Federal Recreational Lands Senior or Access cards accepted for first -come first-served sites at campground. Individual campsite maximum reservation period is 14 days per calendar year. Reservations must be made through the National Recreation Reservation System for all sites that may be reserved ahead of rime. The Juneau Ranger District has a 14 day maximum camping limit per calendar year which applies to both the Mendenhall and Auke Village Campgrounds.

Directions:

Located approx 13 miles from downtown Juneau. There are no roads to Juneau Access is by the Alaska Marine Hwy or via Alaska Airlines. Upon exiting the Ferry Terminal parking lot, turn right travel 1.7 miles to DeHart's Store above Auke Bay marinas. Take left turn up hill to the Back Loop Rd. Travel 2.5 miles to Montana Cr. Rd, turn left and travel .3 miles to Skater's Cabin Rd. Turn right and travel .3 mile to campground. From the airport terminal building travel .1 mile to jct of Yandukin Shell Simmons Dr. Turn left on Shell Simmons Dr and travel .3 mile to stoplight at intersection of Old Glacier Hwy. Turn left on Old Glacier Hwy and travel .5 mile to stoplight at intersection of Egan Dr. Travel straight on Mendenhall Loop Rd 2.2 miles to intersection of Back Loop Road. Turn left on Backloop Rd, travel 1.4 miles to intersection of Montana Cr, Rd. Turn right and travel .3 miles to Skater's Cabin Rd. Turn right and travel .3 mile to campground. From downtown Juneau take Egan Dr (4 lane divided highway) northwest 8 miles to the stoplight intersection of the Mendenhall Loop Rd. Turn right on Mendenhall Loop Rd. and go north 2.2 miles to intersection of Back Loop Road. Turn left on Backloop Road. travel 1.4 miles to intersection of Montana Cr. Rd. Turn right and travel .3 miles to Skater's Cabin Road. Turn right and travel .3 mile to campground.
