MORE WRECKAGE RECOVERED FROM FLIGHT 261; ADDITIONAL FILINGS AND SHAVINGS FOUND ON OTHER AIRPLANES

The United States Navy today recovered, from the main wreckage area, several significant parts of the wreckage of Alaska Airlines flight 261. These parts include large portions of the right and left elevators and an eight foot section of the outboard right stabilizer. All of the recovered parts will be examined by NTSB investigators.

The Safety Board is also working closely with the FAA following its order for the immediate inspection of DC-9s, MD-80s and related series airplanes. The NTSB has been notified of three additional airplanes* and has sent investigators to look at a total of five airplanes that have been reported to have metal filings or shavings in or around their horizontal stabilizer jackscrews.

Inspection of the airplanes is being conducted by the air carriers with supervision from the FAA. The Safety Board will be examining all parts that are removed from the affected airplanes.
