Statement by Chairman Jim Hall
National Transportation Safety Board
May 10, 1998

I am pleased to see the speed with which the Federal Aviation Administration has acted this weekend to address this fuel tank issue. It is gratifying that aggressive regulatory action is being pursued to identify and eliminate one of the dangers identified by the National Transportation Safety Board in its investigation of the crash of TWA flight 800 – potential ignition sources that could spark a fuel tank explosion.

The FAA is to be congratulated for its swift action today in ordering inspections of the older model Boeing 737s.
