NTSB Donates Excess Computer Equipment To Area Schools

(Washington, D.C.) - The National Transportation Safety Board today donated excess computer equipment to eight schools in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The surplus computers, which included both desktop and laptop models, had a value of almost $100,000 when initially purchased.

Chairman Jim Hall, on meeting with school officials at NTSB headquarters, expressed the Board's enthusiasm for helping area students develop computer skills. "Computer literacy is an important key to success in today's world," said Hall, "and the Safety Board is pleased to be able to contribute to the efforts of our schools to give our students the best possible preparation for the challenges ahead."

The Safety Board was acting under an Executive Order signed by President Clinton on April 17, 1996, which streamlined the transfer of surplus computer equipment from Federal agencies to the nation's classrooms.

The Board has previously donated excess computer equipment to schools in this area, selecting recipients based on a listing suggested by NTSB employees.

Today's recipient schools were: Stanton Elementary and Wheatley Elementary Schools in the District of Columbia; North Carroll Middle School in Hampstead, Maryland; and, in Virginia, Hylton High School (Woodbridge), St. Patrick School (Fredricksburg), South Lakes High School (Reston), Cherry Run Elementary School (Burke), and All saints School (Manassas).
