UPDATE ON NTSB INVESTIGATION INTO THE CAPSIZING OF THE TAKI TOOO

The National Transportation Safety Board today released the following information on its investigation of the June 14, 2003, capsizing of the small passenger vessel "Taki Tooo" while transiting Tillamook Bar near Garibaldi, Oregon. The vessel was carrying 19 people when the accident occurred; there were 11 fatalities.

The Safety Board's investigation of the Taki Tooo capsizing is ongoing. The fact-gathering and testing phases have been completed and a detailed analysis of the events is underway. The investigating team conducted over 30 interviews and collected over 200 documents. The materials include toxicology and medical examiner reports, charts of the area, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers soundings (pre and post accident), numerous VHF communications recordings, drawings by witnesses and survivors, a passenger list, and vessel documentation. Also being utilized in the analysis are approximately 150 photographs, both digital and film, that were taken during the on-scene investigation.

NTSB Chairman Ellen Engleman-Conners stated that the Board's analysis will involve a thorough and complete examination of all aspects of the Taki Tooo accident with the goal of making recommendations that will prevent similar tragedies in the future.

"As we approach another Father's Day weekend," said Chairman Engleman-Conners, "I hope everyone will make safety a priority."
