NTSB MAY 1 BOARD MEETING: CRUISE SHIP FIRE, HIGHWAY ANTI-COLLISION TECHNOLOGY AND POSITIVE TRAIN SEPARATION


The National Transportation Safety Board holds a public Board meeting Tuesday, May 1 at 9:30 a.m., at its Board Room and Conference Center, 426 L’Enfant Plaza, S.W., Washington, D.C. There are three items on the agenda:

  1. Final report on investigation into the fire aboard the cruise ship Ecstasy in Miami on July 20, 1998. Among the 3,500 persons aboard, 23 suffered injuries, all but one minor. Losses from the fire and associated damages exceeded $17 million. Press Officer: Ted Lopatkiewicz
  2. Special Investigation Report on Highway Rear-End Collision Prevention Technologies. Rear-end collisions are the second most common type of crash on our roads, accounting for almost 30% of highway crashes in 1999. Press Officer: Lauren Peduzzi
  3. Board discussion on the issue of positive train separation technologies, designed to prevent collisions between trains. This issue is on the Board’s Most Wanted list of safety improvements. Press Officer: Terry Williams
