NTSB CHAIRMAN TO SPEAK AT CENTURY COUNCIL HARDCORE DRUNK DRIVER EVENT

As part of the National Transportation Safety Board's effort to deter hardcore drunk drivers, Chairman Ellen G. Engleman will speak on Thursday, October 2, 2003 at the Century Council's release of their new Hardcore Drunk Driving Sourcebook. The sourcebook is a tool designed to help state legislators push for a strengthened and coordinated system to fight this dangerous group of drivers.

The hardcore drinking drivers issue was added to the Safety Board's list of Most Wanted Safety Improvements in July, 2003. While progress has been made on this significant safety issue, 33 States have not adopted an "aggravated" BAC law that is consistent with the Safety Board's definition of a hard core drinking driver; 11 states do not conduct sobriety checkpoints; and 10 states do not have Administrative License Revocation laws for DWI test refusal or failure.

"Hardcore drunk drivers threaten the life of everyone who shares the road with them," said Chairman Engleman, "The problem is clear. Now we must focus our efforts on the solution and this sourcebook provides a road map for eliminating the hardcore drinking and driving risk."

The Century Council event will take place at the National Press Club, Zenger Room at 10 a.m.
