NTSB EXPANDING INVESTIGATIVE TEAM AT BOSTON TUNNEL ACCIDENT

The National Transportation Safety Board is expanding its investigative team at the scene of Monday's fatal accident in the Interstate 90 connector tunnel in Boston. Augmenting the investigators who have been on-scene since shortly after the accident occurred, the NTSB is sending additional highway engineers, a metallurgical engineer, and the agency's director of highway investigations. There will be a total of seven Safety Board personnel working on-scene, supported by other specialists, as needed, from NTSB headquarters.

"This tragic accident raises some serious safety issues that require independent investigation," said NTSB Acting Chairman Mark V. Rosenker. "We need to find precisely what went wrong in that tunnel and how to prevent similar accidents in the future."

The Investigator-in-Charge of the NTSB team is Mark Bagnard.

The additional team members are expected to arrive on-scene Friday morning.

As the investigation proceeds, periodic updates will be issued from the NTSB Public Affairs Office in Washington DC.
