MULTIVEHICLE COLLISION AT INTERSTATE TOLL PLAZA, HAMPSHIRE, ILLINOIS
SUBJECT OF NTSB PUBLIC MEETING

The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a public Board meeting on Tuesday, April 18, 2006, starting at 9:30 a.m. in its Board Room and Conference Center, 429 L'Enfant Plaza, S.W., Washington, D.C.  One item is on the agenda:

Highway Accident Report - On October 1, 2003 a Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling eastbound and approaching the Hampshire-Marenga toll plaza on Interstate 90 struck the rear of a twenty-five passenger specialty bus initiating a multi-vehicle collision involving three additional vehicles. Eight passengers on the specialty bus were killed in the collision.

Safety issues considered in the accident report include: toll plaza design and the lack of national standards for toll plaza design; FMCSA oversight of passenger motor carriers operating on revoked authority; collision warning system performance standards; and vehicle compatibility between large trucks and smaller passenger vehicles.
