I support mandatory bar codes, expiration dates and lot numbers on all unit doses of medications. This will dramatically increase our potential to avoid medication errors by using arm band and other technology prior to administering meds to patients. Medication errors are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Advances clearly need to be made in the method meds are dispensed within the health care system. We need to utilize technology to aid us with the ever increasing shortage of both pharmacists and nurses as well as to double check the human component of med distribution and administration.
