The mission of the Texas A&M University Corpus Christi Family Life Center is to reduce the incidence of violence, delinquency, in-school problem behaviors, truancy, and substance use among program participants. The program, housed at the Hass Middle School, annually serves 50 youth and their families through after-school, weekend activities, and a summer program. The academic curriculum includes the development of cognitive skills through reading comprehension, writing, math, educational software and computer use, educational computer games, one–to-one tutoring, peer tutoring, educational board games, critical thinking skill games, math, bingo, reading circles, and journal writing. Recreational enhancement promotes recreation and leisure, healthy lifestyles, and interpersonal skills. Activities are designed to develop positive social skills: leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship, and include field trips, team sports, camping, arts and crafts, sporting events and meditation. Cultural development activities promote sensitivity, respect and celebration of various systems of values, norms, traditions and mores and feature cultural guest speakers, family history, personal and collective stories, museum tours, study of the local community, and cultural field trips. Family bonding activities focus on improving family relations, parenting skills, and resiliency and include holiday celebrations, parent meetings, and workshops. Career development activities provide youth with skills necessary for job readiness. Activities include resume writing, job shadowing, college tours, computer literacy, and job employment skills. The personal development curriculum focuses the social, emotional, physical and spiritual well being of participants. Goal setting lessons, conflict and anger control training, value teaching, community service projects, and self-esteem/motivation workshops are provided. The program operates in conjunction with a number of community partners, participation from University staff, and University students who serve as mentors and assist in supervising participants. |
