Project Period: 08/01/03 - 07/31/06
FLC Director: Maria del C. Toro
Target Group: 5th-6th Grade Students

The Family and Community Violence Prevention Program: Hope for Our Children and Families partners with a local elementary school, and the faith, social services, police, and legal communities to address violent and abusive behavior of low income, at-risk communities in the southern part of Ponce Puerto Rico. Academic year and summer program activities are offered in: academic development, recreational enhancement, cultural development, family bonding, and personal and career development. The program targets 50 Hispanic fifth and sixth grade students from the Fernando Malavé Elementary School, and their families. Academic development activities emphasize cognitive skills and study skills, and include tutoring in mathematics, reading comprehension, and writing. Recreational enhancement promotes recreational activities, appropriate use of leisure time, development of healthy life styles, and the strengthening of interpersonal relationships. Activities include sporting events, handcrafts, student and parent filed trips, concerts, historical/cultural heritage outings, and education on tobacco and drug and alcohol abuse prevention. Cultural development activities promote knowledge and awareness of the students' heritage and the traditions and values of the people of Puerto Rico. Family bonding activities include workshops (for participants and family members) to increase family strengths in communication, unity, values, humor, history, resiliency, self-esteem, and spirituality. Career development activities explore work attitudes and vocational interests. Seminars and career fairs cover job characteristics, responsibilities and qualification, presentations by professionals, and role playing. Personal development activities emphasize the physical, social, emotional and spiritual well-being of the youth and their families. Workshops cover such topics as stress management, prevention of domestic violence, conflict resolution and problem solving. University faculty and staff participate in training courses, workshops, and other services; undergraduate students serve as mentors and tutors.
