| The goals of the Albany State University Family and Community Violence Prevention Program are to reduce the incidence of violence among program participants, raise their awareness and appreciation of various cultures, strengthen family ties, and promote healthy lifestyles and relationships within the community. The project targets 40 violence prone, at-risk African American male students who attend Dougherty Middle School in East Albany. Academic assistance is provided through after-school tutoring in reading, writing and math, daily homework assistance, and a structured summer program. Weekend and summer recreational activities include visits to museums, cultural and historical sites as well as participatory sporting events. Other recreational and cultural activities include plays, concerts, games, hiking, bird watching, and family cookouts. Participants are provided training on job skills and work ethics through workshops held on the campus of Albany State College. Workshops for participants and their parents are offered on family relations, parenting skills, parent-child communications, conflict resolution, problem solving, and anger management. Community partners including the Albany Police Department, Network of Trust, and Weldon Springs Missionary Baptist Church conduct sessions on such topics as strengthening the community's spiritual well being, promoting safe communities, character development, and leadership training. The five-week summer enrichment program offers a structured education program supplemented by family activities and field trips. Albany State University students tutor and mentor participants. |
