RPN Spotlight - Dr. Charles S. Modlin, Jr.

Dr. Modlin is a Kidney Transplant Surgeon and Urologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He completed a six-year residency in urology at New York University in 1993 and then completed a 3-year Fellowship in Basic Science Transplant Immunology and Clinical Renovascular Surgery. In 1983 he graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Chemistry and received his medical school education at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago graduating in 1987.

In 1996 he joined the Staff of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation’s Urological Institute with a joint staff appointment within the Cleveland Clinic Transplant center. Dr. Modlin in addition has served as director of surgical renal transplantation at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio and Akron City Hospital in Akron, Ohio. He has authored scientific publications and presented scientific research at national meetings.

"I have dedicated my life to helping find a solution to the devastating health disparities which afflict this nation’s racial and ethnic minority populations. The Resource Persons Network (RPN) represents a national network of similarly minded professionals who share in my passion to see an end to health disparities," Dr. Modlin said.

Dr. Modlin has made outstanding initiatives and contributions toward the elimination of health care disparities. Dr. Modlin is a leading force in Cleveland and leading the initiatives at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation toward elimination of health disparities. He is the Founder and Director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Minority Men’s Health Center which has gained national prominence. The center provides direct patient care (regardless of insurance status), patient education, research and community outreach to minority men and coordinates minority health initiatives at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation to eliminate health care disparities. Of significance, Dr. Modlin is one of only 15 African American Transplant Surgeons in the United States and devotes much of his personal and professional energy educating minority patients regarding options for kidney transplantation. At the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Dr. Modlin is a member of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, Anatomy Curriculum Committee and Admissions Committee.

Dr. Modlin’s effort toward elimination of health disparities has earned him Proclamation and Special Recognition by Cleveland Mayor Jane Campbell and Cleveland City Council President Frank Jackson. In addition, Dr. Modlin because of his work toward elimination of health disparities in the minority community was voted as one of “Cleveland’s Most Interesting People” in the First Edition of “Who’s Who In Black Cleveland”.

On the home front, Dr. Modlin is married and a father of four children, ages 11, 9, 6, 5 years. His wife Sheryl is a Pediatric Anesthesiologist at University Hospitals of Cleveland. He takes great pride in that he is very active in the lives of his children. Dr. Modlin credits his professional and personal successes to the inspiration, motivation, and work ethic he received from his parents, Charles Sr. and Grace Modlin (recently deceased) of New Castle, Indiana and the blessings of God.
