“Fort Dix Six”

December 22, 2008 - Fort Dix Terror Trial Ends With Guilty Verdict

After spending 38 hours over six days deliberating, a jury convicted five foreign-born Muslim men of plotting to attack Fort Dix and murder American soldiers, but acquitted them of attempted murder. The Philadelphia RCFL supported the investigation which authorities first learned of in January 2006 after a clerk at an electronics store notified the FBI about a “disturbing” video he was asked to copy onto a DVD. According to court documents, the video showed 10 men in their early 20’s shooting assault weapons while calling for jihad. By March 2006, the group was infiltrated by an informant working with the FBI. The men also allegedly conducted surveillance at other military installations in the region including Fort Monmouth in New Jersey, Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, and a Philadelphia Coast Guard station.

The Philadelphia RCFL supported the investigation from its beginning and examined two laptops in 2006. Between 2007 and 2008, PHRCFL Examiners provided on-site digital forensics expertise for five on-site searches, and conducted examinations on nearly a dozen computers and more than 100 CD/DVD/digital media items. During the defendants’ trial, which began on October 20, 2008, two PHRCFL Examiners testified regarding their digital forensics findings during the investigation.

Although investigators said the men were inspired by Osama bin Laden, they were not accused of any ties to foreign terror groups. The five convicted men face life in prison – a sentencing date has not been set at this writing.
