On Dec. 22 a retaining wall failed at the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant in Roane County releasing more than 5.4 million cubic yards of coal ash from a landfill on to and into surrounding land and waterways. TDEC is actively overseeing timely cleanup and safe disposal of recovered coal ash from the spill while also developing a comprehensive environmental monitoring plan to better inform citizens while ensuring full, complete cleanup
