NTSB Commemorates Ten Years of the
Aviation Disaster Family Assistance Act

The NTSB Office of Transportation Disaster Assistance is planning two events to commemorate the ten-year anniversary of the Aviation Disaster Family Assistance Act. The first event is a workshop at the NTSB Academy on October 11, 2006. The second event is a commemoration program in Washington, D.C. to be scheduled for late 2006 or early 2007.
The Act tasked the NTSB with coordinating assistance to families of victims involved in major aviation accidents. In the ten years since, a new era of Family Assistance in disaster response has evolved, encompassing applications in other transportation accidents, criminal events, and natural disasters.

Family Assistance Workshop: Meeting the Challenges in a New Era of Disaster Response

In consideration of the lessons learned in family assistance programs over the last ten years, this workshop will explore current issues in family assistance; the evolution of service delivery to those affected by large-scale disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina and 9/11; and will focus on ideas and strategies on how to most effectively meet emerging challenges. Disaster professionals, academic researchers, government officials, mental health professionals and educators will examine topics such as:

New developments in family assistance
How evolving communications technology will affect the family assistance process
Recent academic findings relating to family assistance operations
How the family assistance model has been successfully used and modified in recent disasters of all types -- transportation, criminal and natural
The future - new applications and approaches to emerging challenges
