Title Advanced Skills in Disaster Family Assistance
Description

This course will explore the unique set of leadership skills required to successfully manage the family assistance process within the chaotic post-disaster environment. Participants will be provided with decision-making tools, crisis communication strategies, and methods for deploying resources to families.

The program will offer practical solutions for the challenging aspects of managing large-scale fatality events while coordinating available resources with industry, federal, state and local agencies.

Overview
  • Key techniques for effective family assistance leadership in disaster situations
  • Practical strategies for disaster crisis management
  • Managing family assistance operations
  • Integrating lessons learned from recent disasters into the next generation of family assistance operations
  • Exercise: Participants will establish and operate a Family Assistance Center
Performance Results Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:
  • Define an integrated model of disaster family assistance
  • More effectively manage family assistance responses using crisis management tools
  • Communicate with family members on complex and difficult topics
  • Define crisis leadership skills necessary to effectively work in an emotionally charged environment
Who May Attend
  • Commercial transportation industry officials, particularly those that are in a position to set or influence policy, or have a family assistance role during transportation disasters
  • Representatives of federal agencies, particularly those that have a role in transportation disaster response
  • Representatives of non-governmental and/or private agencies that have a legitimate and recognized transportation disaster response role
  • Members of the academic community attending for research purposes (on a space-available basis)
