Student Intern Positions at National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)
Office of Aviation Safety

Continually accepting applicants for Spring, Summer, and Fall Terms

The NTSB offers internship opportunities in the Office of Aviation Safety throughout the year.  This opportunity is open to undergraduate and graduate aviation students with appropriate credentials and are located at the various regional offices throughout the United States.  Internships are offered on an unpaid basis under the provisions of the Student Volunteer Program and last approximately three to four months. Students gain hands-on work experience directly related to aviation safety, and allow students an opportunity to explore aviation career options as well as develop personal and professional skills. Occasionally, depending on the availability of funds, a student volunteer may be hired back the following year into a paid position under the provisions of the NTSB's Student Temporary Employee Program (STEP), or the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP).

Description of Work:

Student volunteers work under the direction of an NTSB aviation accident investigator and provides assistance to the investigator in the conduct of selected accident/incident investigations. The student provides support during the on-scene phase of the investigation and in the Office.  Typical duties include:  conducting research, writing briefing papers and preliminary accident reports,and preparing materials for inclusion in the public docket

Work Schedule:

Part-time or full-time positions are available. Flexible work schedules can be approved on a case-by-caase basis.  A minimum of 20 hours of work per week is required, with a maximum of 40 hours per week.  Internships generally last between 3 and 4 months, and should coincide with the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters of most 4-year universities.  Arrangements for specific starting and ending dates depend on the needs of the Agency and the schedule of the Student..  Students are responsible for housing and transportation and must be able to commute to the  selected work location.

Qualification Requirements:

Student must demonstrate a skill in technical writing. Completion of a college-level technical writing course and has some work experience is helpful.
Student must demonstrate leadership ability (i,e, civic, community or campus involvement)

  1. Cover letter introducing the student as a candidate for the position, which should also include their anticipated dates of availability.
  2. An application.  The following documents are acceptable: OF-612, Optional Application for Federal Employment, a resume or other available application format.  All applications must contain:  identifying information including full name, address, email address,) education, experience, other qualifications,
  3. Supplemental statement addressing the following listed Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.  Statements for this position are generally one page in length, with one paragraph to address each area.
    1. Skill in the use of computers.
    2. Knowledge of General Aviation Flight Operations.
    3. Skill in writing technical reports.
  4. An official transcript certifying your GPA (note that in your initial package you may include an unofficial transcript, but the agency must receive an official certified transcript before the interview.).
