Employee Benefits

The Federal government offers one of the most comprehensive benefits programs for its employees and their families.

Insurance Programs

Health Insurance (FEHB)

Federal employees, retirees, and their survivors enjoy the widest selection of health plans in the country.  They can choose from among Fee-for-Service (FFS) plans, and their Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), or plans offering a Point of Service (POS) product, or Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) if they live (or sometimes if they work) within the area serviced by the plan.  For additional information, visit www.opm.gov/insure.  External link disclaimer.

Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP)

The Federal Employee Dental and Vision Benefits Enhancement Act of 2004 established arrangements under which supplemental dental and vision benefits are available to Federal employees, retirees, and their dependents.  For additional information, visit www.benefeds.com.  External link disclaimer.

Federal Flexible Spending Accounts Program (FSAFEDS)

Federal employees can elect to participate in the Federal Flexible Spending Accounts Program (FSAFEDS).  FSAFEDS offers two different accounts: a health care flexible spending account, and a dependent care flexible spending account.  For additional information, visit www.fsafeds.com.  External link disclaimer.

Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP)

The Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program was designed specifically for Federal employees.  This program is designed to protect enrollees against the high cost of long term care.  For additional information, visit www.LTCFEDS.com.  External link disclaimer.

Life Insurance (FEGLI)
The Federal Government established the Federal Employees Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Program on August 29, 1954. FEGLI is the largest group life insurance program in the world, covering over 4 million Federal employees and retirees, as well as many of their family members. FEGLI provides group term life insurance. As such, it does not build up any cash value or paid-up value. It consists of Basic life insurance coverage and three options. In most cases, if you are a new Federal employee, you are automatically covered by Basic life insurance and your payroll office deducts premiums from your paycheck unless you waive the coverage. In addition to Basic, there are three forms of Optional insurance that you may elect. You must have Basic insurance in order to elect any of the options. Unlike Basic, enrollment in Optional insurance is not automatic -- you must take action to elect the options. The cost of Basic insurance is shared between you and the Government. You pay 2/3 of the total cost and the Government pays 1/3. Your age does not affect the cost of Basic insurance. Optional, on the other hand, is based on your age and you pay the full cost.
