APPROACHING NOV. 1 DEADLINE, MCNERNEY BACKS EFFORT TO EXTEND INTERNET TAX MORATORIUM

October 30, 2007

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) today backed the House’s efforts to extend the Internet Tax Moratorium through 2014.  The Internet Tax Moratorium is set to expire on Thursday, November 1.

H.R. 3678, Internet Tax Moratorium Extension, identical to a version passed by the Senate last week, passed the House today by a unanimous vote.

“The Internet is a driving force in today’s economy and hundreds of millions of people have come to rely on it for everything from the mundane to the extraordinary,” said Rep. McNerney.  “It’s critical that we maintain affordable access for all.”

The moratorium prohibits states and local governments from imposing taxes on most forms of Internet access.  H.R. 3678 includes language to ensure that Internet access and services that are tax-exempt today will remain so under the seven years of this moratorium.

The House originally passed a different version of this bill that would have extended the moratorium for four years.  Passing a compromise seven-year version today ensures that the bill can be sent immediately to President Bush for his signature so the moratorium continues uninterrupted.
