MCNERNEY HOLDS FIRST MEETING WITH EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD

August 28, 2007

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) today held the inaugural meeting of his education advisory board, made up educators, parents and administrators from across the 11th district.  The meeting was held at 2 p.m. at the Edna Middle School in Brentwood.

“Today’s meeting was productive and informative,” Rep. McNerney said.  “I can’t think of a better way to gauge the impact of education policy than by hearing directly from people who are affected by it.  Today’s meeting was especially important because the House is scheduled to discuss No Child Left Behind this fall and I want to have the comments and criticisms from affected community members fresh in mind.”

Discussion in today’s meeting focused on the No Child Left Behind Act as well as parental involvement being an important contributing factor to student success.

Of today’s meeting, Susan Farley, a teacher at Shasta Elementary School in Manteca, said, “It’s amazing how much common ground we found today given the broad geographic reach of the district.  Today’s meeting was important and I was proud to be a part of it.”

“Like the Congressman, I have a science background and I believe we have a responsibility to increase achievement in science and math education otherwise our country may face peril in falling behind others,” said Hilary Haugen an assistant principal at California High School in San Ramon.  “Today’s meeting was very productive and I am glad the Congressman was there to listen.”
