HARCFL Supporting Murder and Kidnapping Investigation

The Heart of America RCFL (HARCFL) is providing digital forensics expertise to investigators for a series of horrific crimes allegedly committed by Richard Davis, 42 and Dena Riley, 40. The pair were arraigned on May 30, 2006 and charged with capital murder, first-degree assault, kidnapping, forcible rape and forcible sodomy in the death of Marsha Spicer. Ms. Spicer’s body was discovered in a shallow grave east of Kansas City on May 15, 2006. Police initially interviewed the suspects about the murder, but they fled before authorities could obtain a warrant to search their home.

After being on the run for 8 days, the couple were found and arrested after being involved in a car accident. They had with them Davis’ 5-year-old niece.

Proving again that digital evidence is present in nearly every criminal case; the HARCFL is examining a host of electronic equipment seized from the couple including computers, video tapes, and flash memory cards. Authorities suspect that the Davis and Riley may be involved with other crimes, and discovered a videotape showing a second victim, Michelle Ricci. Ms. Ricci has been missing since April 2006 – she and Ms. Spicer were friends.

As previously stated, the pair are facing a slew of charges in both Jackson and Clay Counties, and could receive the death penalty. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is a participating agency in the HARCFL. The coupled have also been charged federally for the kidnapping of Davis’ niece. The investigation is on-going, and no date has been set for the trial.
