The Secret Service is a federal law enforcement agency with headquarters
in Washington, D.C. and over 125 offices throughout the United States and abroad.
Congress charged the Secret Service with two responsibilities, protection of our
nation's leaders and criminal investigations. The protective mission of the Secret
Service includes protection of the President and Vice President of the United States;
their immediate families; former Presidents and their spouses; widows and minor
children of former Presidents; major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates
and their spouses; and visiting foreign heads of state.
The Secret Service was established in 1865, solely to suppress the counterfeiting
of U.S currency. Over the years, its investigative responsibilities have expanded to
include the area of counterfeiting of currency and securities; forgery and altering
of government checks and bonds; thefts and fraud relating to electronic funds transfer;
financial access device fraud; identity fraud; telecommunications fraud; computer fraud;
telemarketing fraud; and fraud concerning federally insured financial institutions.
The selectee(s) will participate in a two-year work-study program consistent with
their field of study. The Cooperative Education Program provides an excellent avenue for
the Secret Service to identify and train highly motivated individuals. The student gains
job training, monetary responsibility, federal employee benefits, the potential for
full-time employment after graduation, and an understanding and appreciation for the
work environment at the federal level. The goal of the program is to bring together
classroom training with a participatory work environment to produce capable and productive
employees. Positions are limited.
Students may choose from numerous professional occupations related to their field of
study such as:
- Accountant
- Budget Analyst
- Computer Specialist
- Computer Research Specialist
- Electronic Engineer
- Intelligence Research Specialist
- Management Analyst
- Personnel Management Specialist
- Telecommunications Specialist
- Visual Information Specialist
Baccalaureate Degree students must complete 1,040 hours of study-related work requirements.
About the Criminal Investigator (Special Agent) Co-Op Positions
The selectee(s) will pursue a two (2) year practical training program which will
provide them with the necessary rudiments for the special agent position. The selectee(s) will
be introduced to the many investigative and protective techniques and resources utilized by special
agents in carrying out their important responsibilities. They will work closely with special
agents to gain practical experience in the origination, administration and adjudication of criminal
investigations. These positions are located in the field offices of the Secret Service.
Special Requirements for Criminal Investigator (Special Agent) Co-Op Positions
The selectees(s) must be enrolled in a graduate or law degree educational program,
and successfully complete a polygraph examination and medical examination.
General Qualifications Requirement
- The student must be enrolled full-time in an accredited educational program.
- The student must be enrolled in the school's cooperative education program.
- The student must maintain a 3.0 average in either undergraduate or graduate studies.
- The student must be a U.S. citizen.
- The student must be enrolled in a field of study related to the position for which they are applying.
- All applicants tentatively selected for a position must submit to urinalysis screening for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Actual appointment to the position will be contingent upon the receipt of a negative drug test result.
- All Secret Service positions require top secret security clearances. Students may be appointed based on the results of a preliminary background investigation; however, continued employment is contingent upon completion of the full field background investigation.
- Some positions require a polygraph examination.
- The final goal is to bring the students into full-time positions upon graduation.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must certify that they have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under Selective Service law.
- A signed working agreement between the educational institution and the Secret Service is required before the student is eligible for employment. The agreement documents the student's work schedule, program criteria, and requirements for future non-competitive conversion to full-time federal employment.
Work Schedule
Students work part-time (no less than 16 hours per week and no more than 32 hours per week).
However, during the holidays and school breaks, the student is eligible to work full-time.
