Woolsey Announces $337,500 for Program to Benefit the Disabled

Washington, D.C. - Representative Lynn Woolsey (D-Petaluma) announced Thursday that Community Resources for Independence (CRI) of Santa Rosa, CA will receive $337,500 to assist individuals with disabilities and long-term illnesses. The grant was awarded by the Department of Health and Human Services and will be distributed over the next three years.
"Long term illness or disability doesn’t have to mean a lifetime of institutionalization," said Rep. Woolsey. "It is important that the elderly and the disabled are educated about options for care and services available to help them live independent, productive lives. Individuals and their families need to know about care options so that no one’s participation in community life is curtailed by physical or mental impairment."

The Santa Rosa-based non-profit organization will use the grant money to develop a program for all of California to help individuals with disabilities make appropriate decisions in transitioning from institutions to the local community. The money will also be used to develop a model for educating the disabled and their families about appropriate options for care.

"I believe the most important part of a transition program should be advocacy on behalf of the disabled to increase their community options and prevent institutionalization," said Sandy Hobart, Executive Director of CRI. "With this grant, CRI will be able to develop a program that could potentially be replicated throughout California. This program would not only aid in transitioning the disabled to community life but also include outreach, education and training for the community as well."

CRI, one of 29 Independent Living Centers in California, was established in 1976 by a group of disabled and non-disabled individuals to advance the rights of people with disabilities to equal justice, access, opportunity and participation in our communities.

Representative Lynn Woolsey is committed to improving health care in the North Bay. Among the initiatives she has successfully obtained include: $1.02 million for a Sonoma County telemedicine initiative at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, leading the California delegation to resolve a three year dispute over Medi-Cal funds resulting in a $85 million settlement and securing $500,000 for substance abuse programs in the district.
