GSI-191 Extension Requests

During 2006 and 2007, most plants submitted requests to extend completion of corrective actions for Generic Letter 2004-02 beyond the December 31, 2007 completion date specified in the Generic Letter. Typically, such requests involved additional time needed to make a particular modification to a given plant. Because of the complexities associated with potential interactions between chemicals in the containment sump and debris in the sump, it became clear in late 2007 that most plants would need a few months, of additional time to complete corrective actions. Generally, the remaining actions involved testing and analyses needed to confirm capability of newly installed, much larger strainers to function adequately. The NRC reviewed these requests, with particular attention to interim measures already taken by licensees to minimize the risk of strainer clogging (e.g., installation of much larger strainers, removal of problem materials). The licensee submittals and NRC responses are shown below. A number of additional extension requests have been received in 2008.
