Washington D.C.-- This week, Congressman Wilson wrote to residents to announce that a new bill that will decrease dependence on foreign oil and encourage investment in renewable energy was passed by the House of Representatives this week.
A copy of the letter follows:
February 29, 2008
Dear Friends,
With oil prices hitting new highs I am pleased to announce that the House of Representatives has passed of the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax of 2008 (H.R. 5351) on February 27. Energy dependence and climate change are serious and growing problems. I believe that the solution to this problem requires Congress to focus the nation’s efforts on innovation, while still using our abundant resources.
This legislation would help reduce our dependence of foreign oil while investing in clean, renewable energy by expanding tax credits for renewable electricity, energy and fuel, as well as for plug-in hybrid cars, energy efficient homes, buildings and appliances. Without the prompt extension of these tax credits, renewable energy project work stoppages could cost 116,000 jobs.
The tax credits would be paid for by repealing $18 billion worth of unnecessary tax breaks for big oil companies. The big five oil companies are announcing record profits as consumers have been pinched at the pump. That’s not fair. I am proud to have supported this important bill.
