Unfortunately, some tax practices hurt our working families the most, but I am working hard to make sure that they get the tax breaks they deserve. Alternative Minimum Tax I voted for the Temporary Tax Relief Act , which offers more than $50 billion in middle-class tax relief and saved more than 29,000 households in the Sixth Congressional District from paying higher taxes under the Alternative Minimum Tax. This tax was originally designed to ensure very wealthy individuals pay their fair share of income tax, but it wasn’t indexed for inflation and now threatens to impact middle-class families. Economic Stimulus Package I also supported the Recovery Rebates and Economic Stimulus for the American People Act earlier this year and I was excited that Congress passed the bill so quickly. This Economic Stimulus Package provided tax rebates to those who need it most: working families, senior citizens and veterans. The plan is also expected to add up to 500,000 jobs to the economy by putting money into the hands of America’s small businesses.
