Department of Labor

Expanded Electronic Government
Governmentwide Management Initiative

The Department of Labor (DOL) is responsible for promoting the welfare of America’s job seekers, wage earners and retirees.  The Department promotes safe and healthful working conditions, the payment of minimum hourly wage and overtime pay, free and open collective bargaining, freedom from employment discrimination, and is responsible for unemployment insurance, skills development, protection of retirement and health care benefits for retirees, and the collection and analysis of nationwide employment data.

A top priority under the President’s Management Agenda’s Expanded Electronic Government (E-Gov) initiative is modernizing and streamlining program and business processes through the application of state-of-the-art technology.  The Department of Labor has embraced the E-Gov initiative and with the support and involvement of senior management, is implementing it across the spectrum of its activities.

These efforts have resulted in quality citizen service, improved coordination within the Department, enhanced collaboration with other Federal agencies and improved mission capabilities.  The Department’s five specific E-Gov initiatives for the Department are:

  • E-Grants: a unified system that is fully integrated in the Department’s financial system.
  • E-Procurement: a streamlined and unified system used throughout the agency that accelerates purchasing, provides better customer service and saves money.
  • Safety and Health Information Management System: a Departmentwide, web-based, end-to-end E-filing system used for collecting, submitting and tracking workers’ compensation claims.
  • Unified Technology Infrastructure: a Departmentwide initiative to consolidate DOL’s heterogeneous technology infrastructure into a unified environment.
  • E-Judication: currently under development, this system will modernize the Department’s adjudication processes by providing a fully electronic, citizen-centric end-to-end process.
