ARCURI ANNOUNCES LOCAL FIRE GRANTS

March 1, 2007

Washington, DC -- Today, U.S. Representative Michael A. Arcuri (D-Utica) announced $300,861 in Assistance to Firefighters Grants for the City of Norwich and Oxford Fire Departments through the Department of Homeland Security Office of Grants and Training Preparedness Directorate to enhance their first responder capabilities.

“Our communities depend on local fire departments for security and safety,” Arcuri said.  “The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program helps local fire departments provide the highest quality services to keep our cities and towns safe.  As a member of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, I am committed to helping local fire departments and emergency services. I also am proud to be a cosponsor of legislation, which passed with a bipartisan majority, to implement the recommendations of the nonpartisan 9/11 commission and ensure that New York gets the federal homeland security funding it needs and deserves. ”

The grants, for operations and safety, include:

• $148,443 for the City of Norwich Fire Department

• $152,418 for the Oxford Fire Department

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG) awards grants to firefighters, emergency response personnel and first responders throughout the nation to enhance response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of first responders and the citizens in their communities. AFG grants provide resources for training, first responder health and safety programs, and response equipment and vehicles.
