Aims of the meeting
To assess current status of technique and role of portal pressure measurements in management of portal hypertension. A special focus will be on standardization of terminology and methodology in hepatic vein pressure gradient measurements and assessment of current evidence for the usefulness of these measurements in managing portal hypertension. Gaps in knowledge about portal pressure measurements and promising opportunities in development of surrogate or non-invasive means of assessing portal pressure will be highlighted. The meeting will attempt to define what studies and study designs would best define the risks, benefits, limitations and role of portal pressure measurements in monitoring patients with advanced liver disease and providing a surrogate for the complications of portal hypertension in clinical trials. Such studies should also allow for assessment of newer non-invasive means of portal pressure assessment. A summary of the meeting and the recommendations would be submitted for publication.
