Projects: Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education
Below is a list of projects for the 4th Congressional District that was included at my request in the Fiscal Year 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill (H.R. 3043). That bill eventually formed part of the end-of-the-year Consolidated Appropriations Act (Public Law 110-161).
Project: Wake County Mental Health Care
Funding: $ 286,898
Description: Funding for Wake County to add 44 new beds to its inpatient, acute mental health care facility at Holly Hill Hospital. This facility provides care to the indigent and uninsured, and additional capacity is needed to compensate for the beds that will be lost when Dorothea Dix Hospital closes in 2008.
Project: North Carolina Symphony Music Education
Funding: $ 167,030
Description: Funding for statewide expansion of the North Carolina Symphony’s K-12 music education program. This funding will bring the program’s musical and artistic residency activities to elementary and secondary students in underserved communities through a partnership with community colleges.
Project: NCCU’s Saturday Academy
Funding: $ 162,117
Description: Funding for expansion of the Saturday Academy’s program to reach more 9th and 10th grade students. Saturday Academy provides supplemental academic support and social enrichment to 400 K-10 students at underperforming schools in Durham.
Project: Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation Caregiver Project
Funding: $ 123,798
Description: Creation of a demonstration program to improve assistance programs for family caregivers. The Family Caregiver Resource Center Demonstration Project will develop, demonstrate, and evaluate a community-based approach designed to increase the utilization and coordination of caregiver services.
Project: Lincoln Community Health Center Renovation
Funding: $ 191,593
Description: Funding for renovation of the Lincoln Community Health Center in Durham, which provides accessible, affordable outpatient health care services to the medically underserved. This funding will help convert garage space into clinic and office space; upgrade bathrooms to be in compliance with building and accessibility codes; and renovate the existing waiting area and exam rooms.
