California Nevada Snowmobile Association - Reports on the latest trail conditions provided by Forest Service and private groomers. |
The Swain Mountain Trails are groomed, making for some pleasant riding this weekend. Swain has the heaviest snowpack on the Almanor and Eagle Lake Ranger Districts. We are running into daytime temperatures that are too warm to groom. On Wednesday, it was sixty-five degrees at noon on top of Turner Mountain on the Morgan Trail System. On the Fredonyer System you can drive a two wheel drive pick-up truck on a muddy road past Roxie Peconom Campground. We can’t groom mud! The Caldera Timber Sale is active, plowing the main access road into Crater and Antelope. Think Snow! Groomers plan to groom the Ashpan trail system and hopefully the Latour trail system beginning Friday, January 10th. Lassen National Forest snowmobile routes are closed to all wheeled vehicles including All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s) until March 31, 2009 (Forest Order No. 06-08-09). Wheeled vehicles create ruts on groomed trails which result in hazardous conditions for snowmobile traffic. Violation of the closure areas and trails is not only dangerous, but can be costly as well. The punishment for violating this order can be up to $5,000 for an individual. Our concern is public safety and protection of the resource.
Lassen National Forest has many types of outdoor recreation. Call the district office for more information on where you can operate your wheeled vehicle. Visitors are reminded that snowmobile traffic is not permitted in the Caribou Wilderness, Thousand Lakes Wilderness and in Lassen Volcanic National Park.
