The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) plans to issue a Request for Applications (RFA), in the spring of 2007 for Centers for Research to Reduce Disparities in Oral Health. This is a competitive renewal and is open to current Centers as well as to new applicants. Letters of intent will be due on July 13, 2007 with applications due not later than November 15, 2007. Review and funding are expected by September 2008.
The purpose of this initiative is to support research focused on improving oral health and ultimately eliminate disparities in vulnerable segments of the U.S. population. These populations include racial and ethnic minorities, low income groups and persons with special needs. Given the complex array of factors - biological, behavioral and environmental - that may need to be addressed as well as the importance of culturally appropriate translational research, multidisciplinary teams that include well established, documented community partnerships will be a requirement of this RFA. The alleviation of the disparities in dental caries, oral and pharyngeal cancer, and periodontal diseases are the priorities of this initiative.
Research approaches such as effectiveness, demonstration and dissemination studies; efficacy trials; health promotion studies; and randomized clinical trials may be proposed. A minimum of two intervention studies will be required, at least one of which must be demonstration and dissemination research. The primary outcome of this demonstration and dissemination research must be improved oral health status in a defined population, clinical or community setting. The improvement must be documented by objective measures of oral health. Ultimately the research results of the Centers for Research to Reduce Disparities in Oral Health should lead to changes in public health policy, clinical practice, community and/or individual action.
