Eureka, October 2, 2008

Forest Supervisor Tyrone Kelley announced today that fire restrictions will be lifted in the Six Rivers National Forest at midnight (24:00 hours) on Friday, October 3, 2008.

This means that beginning on October 4, 2008. Six Rivers National Forest visitors may once again have open campfires outside of designated campgrounds, providing they are in possession of a valid California campfire permit.

This time of year, with shorter days, current and projected cooler temperatures and higher humidity, as well as the reduction of resources committed to large wildland fires in general contributed to the decision to lift fire restrictions in the Forest.

According to Kelley, "lifting these restrictions does not mean fire season is over; fire danger is still moderate. Until sufficient rainfall occurs to significantly affect fuel moisture, the potential for wildland fire starts still exists, particularly if windy conditions prevail." He wants to encourage everyone to be careful with fire while visiting the National Forest.

Kelley reminds Forest visitors that a campfire permit will still be required for open campfires, stoves, and barbeques outside developed campgrounds. The permit lists requirements for clearing the ground around campfires, how to completely extinguish fires, and which tools must be kept at the campfire site at all times. The permit may be obtained free of charge from any Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, or California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection office.
