The final phase of improvements to the Big Rock River Access on the Wild and Scenic Trinity River will begin today, according to Acting District Ranger Trish Clabaugh. For public safety, the area will be temporarily closed to the public during construction from April 9, 2008, through June 30, 2008. The Forest Order closing this area is posted at the Lower Trinity Ranger District, at the recreation site, and on the Six Rivers National Forest website at www.fs.fed.us/r5/sixrivers/conditions/.

Contractors will be installing a new paved river access road, two large shade structures with barbecue facilities, boat launch improvements, and a paved parking lot. The site is located off of Highway 96 across from the Lower Trinity Ranger Station in Willow Creek.

"This river access receives year round use and provides recreation opportunities for rafting, kayaking, tubing, swimming and fishing. Permanent visitor facilities have been needed for a long time," said Orleans and Lower Trinity Recreation Officer Bob Hemus. "Thanks to a grant received by the California Department of Boating and Waterways, we are able to get this work done," continued Hemus. The Forest Service also worked with local communities to determine improvements needed at the site.

"Grants and partnerships, such as the one from the Department of Boating and Waterways, are critical to accomplishing river access improvements," stated Hemus. "With so many river recreation opportunities, we have been focusing efforts over the past ten years on river access improvements, such as toilets, parking, signage, river safety and information bulletin boards, and road or trail access," continued Hemus.
