Forest Supervisor Tyrone Kelley announces that he will officially release the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Orleans Community Fuels Reduction and Forest Health Project on March 28, 2008, for 45 day review and comment.

The Orleans/Somes Bar Fire Safe Council, Mid Klamath Watershed Council, community members, Karuk Tribe of California, three environmental organizations, and local loggers worked for over two years with District Ranger Bill Rice and Forest Supervisor Tyrone Kelley to seek a collaborative solution to reduce hazardous fuels on an estimated 2,700 acres proposed for treatment in this hazardous fuels and forest health project.

"The project takes a strategic approach to reducing hazardous fuel conditions on forest lands surrounding the community of Orleans," said Rice. "It also addresses the need to enhance cultural and spiritual values associated with the Panamnik World Renewal Ceremonial District important to the Karuk Tribe."

Comments on the DEIS must be received by May 13, 2008 and sent to:

  • William Rice, District Ranger
  • Highway 96
  • P.O. Box 410
  • Orleans, CA 95556

Detailed information about the project, including how to provide comments, will be posted on the internet at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sixrivers/ or you may contact Rice at 530-627-3207 for more information.
