Orleans District Ranger Bill Rice is proposing the Orleans Community Fuels Reduction and Forest Health Project. Rice invites interested public to join him in roundtable discussions about this project on May 11 and May 17 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the conference meeting room located at the back of the Orleans Ranger District compound. "These roundtable meetings are very important to me because this early involvement gives the public an opportunity to participate in the development of this project," said Rice. "Discussion between stakeholders with different areas of expertise and interest is essential to this process. My hope is that by working together, we can establish fuel reduction zones along key ridges to the west and south of the Orleans community." continued Rice.

The total area proposed for treatment could exceed 3,000 acres, including over 1,000 acres of plantations less than 40 years old. The treatments would be designed to reduce the potential for adverse impact of fire and create healthy forest conditions that can support the regular use of low-intensity fire.

This project appears to offer good opportunities for the use of stewardship contracting authorities that were recently given to the Forest Service. "I want to explore this possibility to see if we can build the community’s capacity for ecosystem services and safety, build financial opportunities, and bring the community together around social issues related to forest and community health."
