Eureka, September 20, 2005

Forest Supervisor Jeff Walter announced today that fire restrictions will be lifted in the Six Rivers National Forest at midnight on September 23, 2005.

This means that beginning on Saturday, September 24, 2005, Six Rivers Forest visitors may once again have open campfires outside of designated campgrounds, providing they are in possession of a valid California campfire permit. The Klamath, Mendocino and Shasta-Trinity National Forests are continuing to impose fire use restrictions at this time due to drier conditions on those forests.

This time of year, with shorter days, current and projected cooler temperatures and higher humidity, as well as the reduction of large wildland fires in general, contributed to the decision to lift fire restrictions in the Forest. According to Walter, “lifting these restrictions does not mean fire season is over; fire danger is still moderate. Until sufficient rainfall occurs to significantly affect fuel moisture, the potential for wildland fire starts still exists, particularly if windy conditions prevail." He is encouraging everyone to be careful with fire while visiting the national forest.

Walter reminds forest visitors that a campfire permit is still required for open campfires, stoves and barbecues outside developed campgrounds. The permit lists requirements for clearing ground around campfires, how to completely extinguish fires and which tools must be kept at the campfire site at all times. The permit may be obtained free of charge from any Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management or California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection office. For more information, contact Acting Fire Management Officer Kent Swartzlander at 707-441-3615.
