About two a.m. this morning, the Six Rivers National Forest Orleans Ranger District fire staff and Orleans Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire call at a residence located on the Oak Bottom administrative site. Forest Service employee John Mace got his wife and three children to safety as the fire started consuming the garage near their single wide trailer.

Orleans Ranger District employees Troy Parrish, Brandon McClave, Amy Sayler and Dennis Ingle who also live on the compound were at the scene first. Incident Commander Jim Rose took over the incident. Volunteer firefighters from Orleans arrived shortly thereafter to lend their assistance in extinguishing the fire.

The garage structure and two vehicles were lost, while the single wide trailer received minor fire damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The family is staying in a nearby barracks as the fire damage is assessed this morning.

“I am very grateful no one was hurt and want to thank all of the firefighters who responded so quickly to this fire call,” said District Ranger Bill Rice. “A special thanks to the firefighters for their early efforts to assist John and his family in this incident.”
