Most Six Rivers National Forest campgrounds will be open by May 27th, according to Forest Supervisor Jeff Walter. Some campgrounds were closed during the winter due to lower use, the higher potential for spreading Port-Orford-cedar (POC) root disease via traveling on unpaved, wet roads, and to prevent damage to moisture-soaked roads.
Campgrounds that will be open by this date are Big Flat, Grassy Flat, Patrick Creek, Pearch Creek, Dillon Creek, Oak Bottom, Boise Creek, Bailey Canyon and Fir Cove. E-Ne-Nuck Campground opens on June 24th. Panther Flat, North Fork, Aikens Creek West, and Nordheimer are open yearlong.
Mad River Campground near Ruth Lake remains closed this season due to continued major roadwork on Mad River Road (County Road 501). Major noise, blasting, and traffic disruptions are anticipated.
The opening date for Fish Lake and East Fork Campgrounds will be determined right before the May 27th date because of POC root disease precautions. Ground conditions must be relatively dry for these two campgrounds to open to minimize the risk of spreading the disease that kills POC trees. If you plan to camp in either of these campgrounds, please contact the Orleans Ranger District at 530-627-3291 and the Lower Trinity Ranger District at 530-629-2118 to find out the opening date. Campers are reminded that ATVs, dirt bikes, mountain bikes and horses are not allowed in either Fish Lake or East Fork Campgrounds or adjacent trails anytime due to POC concerns.
Most campgrounds are equipped with vault or flush toilets, fire rings or stoves, tables, parking for two vehicles and potable water. Electrical hook-ups are not available. Many of the campgrounds have volunteer hosts. Showers are available at Panther Flat Campground. Make campsite reservations for Grassy Flat, Panther Flat and Patrick Creek Campgrounds by calling toll-free (877) 444-6777 or TDD (877) 833-6777 or contacting www.reserveUSA.com. All other facilities are available on a first come, first serve basis. Campgrounds have varying levels of wheelchair accessibility. Camping site fees range from $8 to $15 per night for single sites.
People wishing to primitive-camp outside of developed campgrounds must obtain a free fire permit for barbecues or campfires. Obtain permits from any Forest Service office or California Department of Forestry office. Permits are good for the calendar year.
