The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors and Mary Kay Vandiver, District Ranger for the Smith River National Recreation Area, Six Rivers National Forest, jointly announce that they are seeking members to serve on the Del Norte County Resource Advisory Committee (RAC). The RAC was chartered through the Payments to States Act of October 2001 to improve collaborative relationships and provide advice and recommendations to the Forest Service. RAC members solicit, review and recommend projects that meet the following objectives:

  • Improve maintenance of existing infrastructure
  • Implement stewardship objectives that enhance forest ecosystems
  • Restore and improve land health and water quality
  • Create additional employment opportunities

Over the past three years, the RAC has helped fund 39 projects totaling over $850,000 in Del Norte County.

As the RAC is being re-chartered, all 15 member positions and 3 replacement member positions need to be filled. To be eligible for consideration, prospective committee members must reside within the State of California and preferably within Del Norte County (the geographic boundary for the RAC). Prospective members should be representative of one of the following three categories:

  • Organized labor, developed outdoor recreation, off highway vehicle users, energy and mineral development interests, commercial timber industry, or hold federal grazing or other land use permits with the Forest and Del Norte County.
  • Nationally recognized environmental organizations, regionally or locally recognized environmental organizations, dispersed recreational activities, archaeological and historical interests, or nationally or regionally recognized wild horse and burro interest groups.
  • State elected office or a designee, County or local elected official, American Indian Tribes within or adjacent to Del Norte County, schools officials or teachers, or represent the affected public at large.

Application forms and additional information can be obtained from Laura Chapman at the Forest Service (707) 441-3549, lchapman@fs.fed.us, or from Ernest Perry, Del Norte County Offices, 981 H Street, Crescent City (707) 464-7254. Application forms can also be obtained by visiting the Payments to States website at http://www.fs.fed.us/payments and navigating to the Del Norte County RAC web page.

People interested in being considered for the RAC should complete an application form and submit the application by June 25 to Mary Kay Vandiver, District Ranger, Smith River National Recreation Area, P.O. Box 228, Gasquet, CA 95543. The County Board of Supervisors will work with the Forest Service to recommend RAC members to the Secretary of Agriculture.
